If you searched “penji reddit”, you want to know what real buyers think before you book a demo. So we read 15 Reddit threads from 2020 to 2026 where people talk about Penji. Here's what they say, in their words, with a link to every comment. You will also see why we read many of the glowing comments with care.
One disclosure first. Cluma is a design subscription service too, so we have a stake. We quote the good comments and the bad ones, and we point out where a thread looks like promotion, whoever might be behind it.
How we read the threads
- 15 threads across r/marketing, r/digital_marketing, r/podcasting, r/graphic_design, r/GraphicDesigning, r/growmybusiness, r/branding, r/indiebiz and the brand-named r/penji, r/PenjiDiscussion and r/designpickle. The full list is in the references.
- Short excerpts only, copied exactly, typos included. Usernames are left out on purpose.
- Prices quoted by users are their own reports from a given year. Penji's current prices are at the end of the price section, with the date we checked them.
- We left out a former employee's complaint about the company and a no-reply post asking whether Penji had been hacked. Neither can be verified from Reddit.
Theme 1: what happy users say
The oldest thread we found is a 2020 head-to-head, and two buyers there were happy with Penji:
“I used both, and I prefer Penji. Because their design is better and the platform is easier to use.”
r/marketing, 12 Apr 2020. Comment [1]
“I just started Penji and am extremely happy with the quality so far. On my 4th project and the output is pretty outstanding.”
r/marketing, 2 Jun 2020. Comment [1]
Later threads add teams that use it for steady production work. A podcast company wrote:
“It's a great deal for us because they get projects done fast and you can continually work with the same designers.”
r/podcasting, 13 Jun 2024. Comment [3]
In a thread about selling design on subscription, one designer mentioned in passing: “My company uses Penji, where you pay a monthly fee for access to a whole team of designers.” (r/graphic_design, 6 May 2024) [5].
Theme 2: the dedicated designer takes time to pay off
The point users repeat most is that Penji gets better once a designer learns your brand. A 2026 post that compared Penji with Design Pickle put it this way:
“Penji takes more setup upfront but the output gets more on-brand over time once the designer gets your style.”
r/penji, 10 Jun 2026. A brand-named subreddit. Post [14]
The one reply agreed and described a more collaborative style than Design Pickle: “Their designers helped me a lot with brainstorming and I like the choice to let them have their own twist to my request.” The same user added, “I get the design sometimes within the day of requesting.” (r/penji, 11 Jun 2026).
So if you are weighing it, plan for a ramp-up. The first few requests teach the designer your style, and the payoff comes later.
Theme 3: price and what “unlimited” means
Price comes up as Penji's edge in the older threads. A 2020 reply called them both design agencies “with penji being cheaper overall” (r/marketing, 22 Jan 2020). The person who started that thread had judged from websites alone:
“Just off websites I feel that Design Pickle does have better cleaner work, but Penji is cheaper.”
r/marketing, 22 Jan 2020. Comment [1]
In 2023, a podcaster asked about a $499 monthly plan and planned to load a month with episode art. Not everyone agreed it was a bargain:
“If it's $499 that's a terrible price to pay per month!”
r/podcasting, 20 Sep 2023. Comment [3]
Another reply named the real catch with that plan: “that would require a lot of planning or a real stash of episodes in advance” (20 Sep 2023). A user who'd tried Penji and Design Pickle made the same point about any queue, in a cluster of comments we describe below: “you still need to be organized with your requests or the queue can get clogged.” (r/growmybusiness, 5 Sep 2025) [4].
In a thread on whether unlimited plans are really unlimited, the clearest answer came from someone describing another service: “It's unlimited requests, not unlimited simultaneous work.” (r/GraphicDesigning, 12 Nov 2025) [11]. A later reply in that thread, which names Penji among others, gave advice you can use with any provider:
“some treat a set as one, some treat each asset as one, and that single policy difference changes the value more than the headline.”
r/GraphicDesigning, 27 Sep 2026. Comment [11]
For context: on 24 October 2026, Penji listed plans at $995, $1,995 and $4,500 a month, with 15% off quarterly and 20% off yearly billing. The $499 figure above is one user's 2023 report. Penji pricing sits next to Cluma's on our compare page, with the date of every figure.
Theme 4: the critics are few, and brief
We found only one clearly negative first-hand comment, and it gives no detail:
“do NOT recommend Penji. Had a horrible experience with them about a year back.”
r/penji, 5 Aug 2026. Comment [12]
That is thin evidence either way. The bigger question for a reader is how much of the praise you can take at face value, which is the next section.
How much of the praise is real?
Read enough Penji threads and a pattern shows up. One commenter said it out loud:
“Is Penji any good? I know they make Reddit posts but last week I had an IRL colleague bring them up.”
r/branding, 29 Aug 2024. Comment [7]
Here's what we saw. We cannot tell who wrote any of these posts, so treat this as a pattern, not a verdict on anyone.
- Question posts that name Penji. Six question posts name Penji in the question itself, in two short bursts: 3, 27 and 29 August 2024, then 4, 15 and 16 September 2025. Most got a warm Penji reply within days, such as “We succumbed to the Penji ads (lol). They're actually pretty good for the price, especially their support.” (29 Aug 2024) and “Personally I found Penji the easiest to work with because of how they assign you a dedicated designer.” (17 Sep 2025).
- Penji replying in the open. Penji's official account answered one of those posters with “Hey, that's us!” (r/indiebiz, 6 Aug 2024) and a recommendation with “Thanks for the shoutout!” (r/branding, 6 Sep 2024). In 2020, a co-founder replied in a comparison thread and said so. That is disclosed, and fair.
- A late cluster on an old thread. A 2024 thread in r/growmybusiness got three Penji-positive comments within eight days in September 2025, more than a year after it started.
- The brand-named subreddits. r/penji and r/PenjiDiscussion carry posts that read like marketing copy, such as “As a Penji user, you've likely experienced the convenience of unlimited design.” (r/penji, 20 Nov 2024) [10]. We quote four posts and comments from r/penji and label each one.
- Other vendors too. A 2025 comment saying it tried Penji, Flocksy and Design Pickle before moving to DolFinContent was called out the next day as one of several brand-new accounts pushing DolFinContent. We don't count it.
None of this means Penji is bad. The 2020 and 2024 comments in Theme 1 come from threads outside these patterns. But if you're judging Penji by Reddit, give the independent threads more weight than the bursts.
Alternatives Redditors mention
Counted across the 15 threads we read. “Comments” means comments naming the service as something people used, tried or recommend. Posts by a service's own founder or staff are not counted.
| Alternative | Comments | Threads | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flocksy | 10 | 8 | Most named, often for copywriting and video in one plan. Many comments read alike, so treat the count with care. |
| ManyPixels | 6 | 4 | Four of the six say they haven't used it. |
| Design Pickle | 5 | 4 | Users describe it as quick to start, with clean first drafts. |
| DesignBees | 2 | 1 | Two long, similar reviews in one thread. |
| Designity | 2 | 1 | A staff reply in the same thread is not counted. |
| Canva or doing it yourself | 2 | 1 | From podcasters on a budget. |
| Others (Kimp, UnicornGo, getads.co, Click Designs, Ghostwriters & Co) | 1 each | 1 each | No first-hand detail beyond a name. |
DolFinContent is left out of the counts, for the reason above.
Where Cluma fits, honestly
Cluma is not the cheaper option here. If you need a steady flow of social posts and ad graphics on a tight budget, Penji's entry plan costs far less than a Cluma module.
Cluma is built for SaaS teams that want senior design and cannot wait for a designer to warm up:
- Senior from day one. A senior designer owns direction and signs off on every deliverable, so you are not waiting for a junior to learn your style.
- One seat per discipline. Nine modules, from brand and websites to product UI, ads and decks. Each works like a senior-led designer seat for one discipline, and you can add or remove modules month to month.
- Published flat rates. $2,995 to $4,995 per module a month, on pricing.
- Same honest limit. One request in progress per module, unlimited requests in the queue. Need two things moving at once? Add a second module.
- Pace by task size. Everyday tasks land in about 48 hours. Bigger projects move milestone by milestone, with progress about every 48 hours.
- Low-risk start. 7-day trial. First month paid in full, then pause or cancel anytime, no cancellation fee.
- Design only. You get dev-ready files. Your team builds.

Can you trust Penji reviews on Reddit?
Read them with care. Many Penji threads arrive in short bursts, with questions that name Penji and quick positive replies. The independent threads from 2020 and 2024 are still positive, so give those the most weight.
How much does Penji cost?
On 24 October 2026, Penji listed plans at $995, $1,995 and $4,500 a month, with 15% off quarterly and 20% off yearly billing. Lower prices quoted on Reddit are older user reports.
What do Redditors recommend instead of Penji?
Flocksy is named most often in the threads we read, followed by ManyPixels and Design Pickle. Several Flocksy comments read alike, and most ManyPixels mentions come from people who haven't used it.
How is Cluma different from Penji?
